How to Advertise on Facebook in 2026: Meta Ads Setup & Strategy Guide

Updated September 2026: Facebook advertising is now managed through Meta Ads Manager and works across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and eligible Audience Network placements. The old workflow of choosing a few fixed Facebook placements and manually building narrow audiences is outdated. In 2026 the strongest campaigns combine a clear business objective, reliable conversion data, broad-enough delivery, strong creative and disciplined measurement.

What you need before launching Meta Ads

Step 1: Choose the business outcome

Do not start with “boost a post” simply because it is easy. Decide whether the goal is sales, leads, app promotion, traffic, awareness or engagement. For ecommerce and lead generation, optimize toward the business action that creates value rather than cheap clicks.

Step 2: Build measurement first

Install the Meta Pixel correctly and use Conversions API where appropriate. Verify events, deduplicate browser/server events and make sure the purchase or lead values passed back to Meta are realistic. If your lead quality varies, connect CRM outcomes where possible instead of treating every form submission as equally valuable.

Step 3: Structure campaigns around the offer

Keep the structure simple enough for the delivery system to learn. Separate campaigns or ad sets when the offer, geography, funnel stage or economics are meaningfully different—not just to create artificial complexity.

Step 4: Use Advantage+ placements by default

Meta currently recommends Advantage+ placements for broad delivery across eligible surfaces. Manual placements can still make sense when creative, compliance or economics require tighter control, but removing placements without evidence can restrict learning.

Step 5: Create native vertical creative

Reels and Stories deserve dedicated 9:16 creative. Put the key message in the safe zone, use readable on-screen text, show the product/service quickly and design for sound-on and sound-off consumption. Meta’s own Reels guidance recommends native vertical creative and broad placement coverage.

Step 6: Build audiences without over-targeting

Start with geography, eligibility and strong creative before layering dozens of interests. First-party audiences such as purchasers, qualified leads or site visitors can still be valuable, but broad/Advantage+ delivery often works better than highly fragmented interest stacks when the conversion signal is good.

Step 7: Match the landing page to the ad

Step 8: Budget for testing, not instant certainty

There is no universal winning daily budget. Budget should reflect expected cost per result, conversion volume and how many creatives/audiences you are testing. A tiny budget split across too many ad sets usually produces weak learning.

Step 9: Judge ads by business quality

Track cost per qualified lead, booked appointment, purchase, gross profit or contribution margin. CTR, CPM and CPC help diagnose creative and delivery, but they are not the final goal.

Facebook Ads vs Google Ads

Meta is often stronger for demand creation and creative-led discovery; Google Search is stronger when people are already expressing intent. Many businesses should use both. See my Facebook Ads vs Google Ads 2026 comparison.
