ShipStation and Shippo both help ecommerce merchants buy labels, compare carriers and manage shipping. The better fit depends on how many orders you ship, how complex your fulfillment process is and whether you prioritize a low-cost entry point or deeper operational tooling.

Decision shortcut: start with Shippo for a simpler, lower-cost entry point; test ShipStation first when multi-channel workflows and automation are the bigger problem.

The short version

Shippo has a particularly accessible starting point because its Starter tier is free up to a limited monthly label volume. ShipStation charges from its entry plan but places strong emphasis on multi-channel shipping operations, automation and scaling shipment workflows.

Pricing

ShipStation currently starts at $14.99/month for a 50-shipment Starter tier. Shippo has a free Starter tier for up to 30 labels and paid Pro tiers that rise with monthly label volume. See the detailed ShipStation pricing guide and Shippo pricing guide.

Small stores

A store shipping only a few dozen packages a month may prefer Shippo’s free entry point or simply Shopify Shipping. The decision should change once fulfillment time, multiple sales channels or repeat manual tasks become meaningful operating costs.

Growing multi-channel stores

ShipStation becomes more compelling when one shipping dashboard is expected to coordinate higher volume, several connected selling channels and automation rules. That does not automatically make it cheaper; test the workflow with your real carriers and order mix.

Branding and customer experience

Both platforms offer customer-facing tracking and notification features on appropriate plans. If branded post-purchase communication matters, compare the exact plan feature rather than assuming it is included in the lowest tier.

International shipping

Both can support international shipping, but merchants whose main challenge is cross-border courier choice, tax and duty visibility should also compare Easyship. See the Easyship review.

A better way to decide

Run a 30-day test with a representative set of orders. Measure total software fees, actual label spend, minutes per order, failed-address corrections, returns effort and customer support workload. That produces a far more useful answer than comparing headline monthly prices.

Start with the software cost calculator, then use the Shopify shipping tools hub to compare alternatives.
