Shopify Shipping Too Expensive? 9 Ways to Cut Delivery Costs

Rate this post

When shipping feels too expensive, the app itself is only one possible cause. Package dimensions, service level, destination mix, free-shipping thresholds and fulfillment habits can move total delivery cost far more than a small monthly software fee.

Before you change platforms: run your 20–50 most common shipments through two or three tools using the same package dimensions, weights and destinations. Then compare the total, not the advertised maximum discount.

1. Audit dimensional weight

Oversized boxes can increase billed weight even when the product itself is light. Record the packed dimensions of your most common orders and test smaller packaging where safe.

2. Compare services, not only carriers

A faster service can be unnecessarily expensive for orders where customers are comfortable waiting an extra day or two. Build rules around order value, destination and promised delivery date.

3. Recheck product weights

Shopify’s calculated rates rely on accurate product and package data. Incorrect weights can lead to poor checkout estimates or unexpected label cost.

4. Test free-shipping thresholds

Free shipping can improve conversion, but the threshold should protect contribution margin. Model the average order value needed to absorb the expected delivery cost rather than copying a competitor’s threshold.

5. Compare platform-negotiated rates

Quote a representative group of real shipments in Shopify Shipping, Shippo, ShipStation and Easyship where available. Use your exact origin, destination, dimensions and weight.

6. Check whether your own carrier account is cheaper

Merchants with negotiated volume contracts may benefit from bringing their own carrier account. Check whether your chosen software supports it and whether the plan adds a per-label fee.

7. Reduce split shipments

Inventory spread across locations can turn one customer order into multiple packages. Review stock allocation and fulfillment rules if split shipments are common.

8. Fix checkout shipping strategy

Your customer-facing shipping charge does not need to mirror the label cost exactly. Test flat rates, order-value conditions and free-shipping thresholds while monitoring conversion rate and margin.

9. Switch tools only after measuring the workflow

A different shipping app may save money, but include software fees and staff time in the calculation. Read the Shopify shipping alternatives guide and compare ShipStation vs Shippo.
